30 Days and Counting!

A month from tomorrow, my friends at Coker and I will be helping new students move their suitcases and microwaves and snuggly binkies and security blankets of every sort imaginable into the dorms. We’ll see Pooh and Disney characters, lucky piggy banks, favorite posters, scuffed up Bob-the-Builder waste baskets and more.

Because as much as the change is exciting and fascinating, it typically comes with a share of silently expressed angst.

And while students and their parents are preparing for the changes ahead, and rightly feel this new season is about them, it is fascinating to be on the community side of things, preparing for their arrival.

Downtown is bustling.  Shopping and dining and special events are being announced practically every day. And new construction is happening in multiple locations.

At the College, we’re preparing to celebrate the opening of the new Wow Café and Coffee Shop (proudly serving STARBUCKS Coffee!!) at 9 a.m. Thursday, August 14.

And then the really big deal.  We’ll host a community open house at the DeLoach Center at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 23.

I am eager for it all to happen, but, goodness it’s a lot.  Today’s cookies are my version of a security binky.  Old-fashioned molasses crinkles: soothing ginger and slow molasses, topped with rich white chocolate.
