Easy Mornings

I’ve tried meditating, and when I’ve managed to do it consistently, I’ve believed it was a positive influence. It was calming and sweet. But it required discipline. Surely I need more discipline.

This morning, though, as I was baking my Friday Cookies, aware that Kitty and I were the only ones moving, that her wandering through the house felt as peaceful as mine around the kitchen, it occurred to me that maybe cookie baking for me is akin to meditating for others, but without the discipline.

While I’m creaming the butter and sugar, taking a whiff of the warm caramel extract, and carefully sliding my favorite flipper under the hot cookies to place them on wire racks that I’ve used since Bucky was a baby, there are no problems.

Tricky projects disappear. Fears about the nation’s politics recede, and images of friends and family members come forward.

Today I’ll get to see Dee, and we’ll talk about old times and about new lessons we’re both learning. This afternoon, someone I’ve not thought of for awhile may pop into the office for a cookie.  Maybe the cookies will be gone by early afternoon. Maybe there will be some left to take home at the end of the day. For the hour or so that I’m baking on Friday mornings, life is as easy as a garden walk.

I hope your Friday morning turns out to be as pleasing as my has been.

Happy Friday,
Come and get ’em!

P.S.  Today’s cookies have white chocolate chips, semi-sweet chocolate chips, dark Belgian chocolate chips (Callebaut Recipe No 811), and toasted pecans.
